What Are Students’ Biggest Challenges? Center Research Heads to AACRAO
The Center for Evidence Based Mentoring is excited to announce that Assistant Director Mia Lamont will be presenting at the 111th AACRAO Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana this April.
The session, “The Transition to College: Understanding Challenges Through a Student-Centered Lens,” draws on findings from a mixed-methods study examining the challenges first- and second-year college students report during the college transition. Using an idiographic approach, the study asked students to identify and rank their own challenges, generating over 1,000 student-reported responses across diverse institutional contexts.
The research takes a close look at how academic, financial, and mental health stressors vary by student identity and institution type, with particular attention to differences between first-generation and continuing-generation students, and between those attending minority-serving institutions (MSIs) and predominantly white institutions (PWIs). The findings offer a data-driven, student-centered foundation for designing more equitable advising, retention, and support services.
Attendees will leave with practical strategies for applying student-reported data to their own institutional contexts.
