Robert Putnam to Deliver Keynote at Upcoming Social Capital Conference
From March 26–28, 2026, Heriot-Watt University Dubai will host the Social Capital 2026 Conference, convening global thought leaders to explore the power of networks, trust, and connection in shaping stronger societies.
Renowned political scientist Robert D. Putnam will deliver a highly anticipated keynote address, drawing on decades of influential research on social capital: the relationships and norms that enable communities to thrive. His remarks are expected to highlight a pressing reality centered on rebuilding social capital globally in an increasingly fragmented world.
In his remarks, Putnam will outline three essential pathways for meaningful societal renewal:
First, Putnam will emphasize that transformative change has historically accelerated when younger generations become energized and ascend to leadership. He will then underscore the importance of grassroots action, noting that while national change unfolds gradually, it is local engagement that drives momentum. Lastly, Putnam will point to the need for upstream moral revival — a cultural shift from “I” to “we” — as foundational to restoring trust and shared purpose.
Putnam has identified his participation in Social Capital 2026 as an opportunity, particularly in a digital landscape, to strengthen global connection and community. This conference promises to spark critical dialogue on how research, policy, and practice, alongside mentoring, can work together to rebuild connection and expand opportunity worldwide.
