Funded by the Caruth Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star (BBBS LS), in partnership with Dare Mighty Things (DMT), presents the Getting to Ready Webinar Series. This four part series shares what BBBS LS discovered in the process of getting ready to serve youth facing a wide range of adversity – specifically truancy and adjudication. The premise of the work is that setting up a strong infrastructure that creates stronger matches and increased school connectedness for all students is the critical foundation for successful work with harder to reach youth. BBBS LS uncovered innovations in match support, academic intervention strategies, partnerships, and mentor recruiting and retention that lay this foundation.

Getting To Ready Part I: Finding and Keeping High Profile Mentors Using a Market Research Approach
Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star, partnering with Dare Mighty Things, Inc., used market data and surveys to identify the interests, values, and consumer habits of the highest performing mentors. This insight led to the development of innovative recruitment and retention strategies. Though we’ve known for some time that mentoring has a positive impact on a youth’s school attendance and academic performance, school connectedness and education hasn’t always taken center stage in mentoring relationships. Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star set out to infuse mentoring with school connectedness strategies and to create a culture in which a key outcome of mentoring would be a significant improvement in reducing truancy and improving academic success.
