It Takes a Campus: Collective Responsibility for Student Wellness

Burwell, S. M. (2024, April 17). A public health approach to the campus mental health crisis. LearningWell Magazine. https://learningwellmag.org/article/a-public-health-approach-to-the-campus-mental-health-crisis

Introduction

College campuses are experiencing historic surges in student mental health needs. Sylvia Burwell (2024) of LearningWell Magazine explored how institutions are shifting from reactive, clinic-based responses to community-based, population-level strategies rooted in public health frameworks.

Methods

This article is a perspective-based analysis drawing on national trends in student mental health, existing public health frameworks, and the author’s experience in higher education leadership. She synthesizes widely cited data on rising mental health needs and highlights illustrative campus examples to argue for a population-level, preventive approach rather than a solely clinical model.

Results

Burwell describes a public health–informed approach to campus mental health that prioritizes prevention, detection, and response. Rather than relying solely on counseling centers, she emphasizes strengthening campus environments and social connections to support student wellbeing and reduce overall demand for clinical services, highlighting how campus-wide efforts and shared responsibility across the institution can contribute to more sustainable mental health support.

Discussion

This article argues that counseling centers alone cannot meet the scale or complexity of current demand. Sustainable progress requires reimagining mental health as a campus-wide responsibility, embedded in culture and community. The focus must move upstream toward prevention and equity.

Implications for Mentoring Programs

Mentors should be trained as frontline allies in this model. Programs could benefit from integrating emotional well-being check-ins, destigmatizing help-seeking, and serving as referral bridges, embedding support into everyday student life.
